What Does a Standard House Cleaning Include?

That Cleaning Girl · House Cleaning

"Standard cleaning" sounds simple until you try to book one and realize every company seems to mean something a little different. Before you hire anyone, it helps to know what's normally in, what's normally out and what you should ask about. If you want the full room-by-room walkthrough first, read The Complete House Cleaning Guide: What a Regular Clean Covers, Room by Room.

The short answer

A standard house cleaning covers the visible, everyday surfaces in each room: counters, sinks, toilets, showers, mirrors, reachable dusting, vacuuming, mopping and trash. It's designed to keep a home that's already in decent shape looking and feeling clean.

That's why standard cleans work best on a schedule. When a cleaner comes every week or every couple of weeks, there's never time for soap scum to harden or dust to pile up, so each visit can cover the whole house at a steady pace. A home that waits months between cleans will still get a standard clean, but it may not look as finished as you hoped, because the dirt has had time to settle in.

What it usually does not cover is the heavy detail work that takes a lot of time: scrubbing grout, cleaning inside appliances, washing walls, detailing every baseboard. Those are either part of a deep clean or offered as add-ons.

Kitchen: what's in a standard clean

  • Countertops cleared and wiped, including the backsplash.
  • Stovetop cleaned and the outside of the oven, dishwasher and fridge wiped.
  • Microwave cleaned inside and out.
  • Sink scrubbed and the faucet polished.
  • Cabinet fronts spot-cleaned where hands and splashes land.
  • Trash emptied and floors vacuumed and mopped.

Dishes are a common question. A standard clean usually assumes the sink is clear enough to clean. If you'd like us to load the dishwasher or hand-wash a pile, that's an extra you can ask for.

Bathrooms: what's in a standard clean

  • Toilets cleaned inside and out, including the base.
  • Tubs, showers and shower glass scrubbed.
  • Sinks, counters and faucets cleaned and shined.
  • Mirrors cleaned streak free.
  • Towel bars, handles and light switches wiped.
  • Trash emptied and floors mopped.

Hard water is the big one in our part of Texas. A standard clean handles the normal week-to-week film on glass and fixtures. Years of baked-on mineral buildup is more of a deep-clean job, because it takes time and repeated treatment to break down.

Bedrooms and living areas

In bedrooms and living spaces, the focus is dust and floors. We dust reachable surfaces like dressers, nightstands, shelves, tables and lamps. We wipe mirrors and glass, straighten up cushions and throws, empty small trash cans and vacuum or mop the floors.

If you leave clean sheets out, we can change the linens. Laundry itself is an add-on, since washing and folding takes real time on top of the cleaning.

What's usually an add-on

These tasks aren't part of most standard cleans, but they can be added when you need them:

  • Inside the oven
  • Inside the fridge
  • Inside cabinets and drawers
  • Interior windows
  • Baseboards throughout the house
  • Blinds
  • Laundry and changing linens
  • Dishes
  • Walls and doors

Adding one or two of these to a regular visit is a nice way to work through the detail jobs gradually. One month do the fridge, the next do the blinds, and the house stays in great shape without one giant marathon.

Tip: If you're not sure whether something is included, just ask before the visit. It's much easier to plan for it than to be surprised after.

Standard clean vs deep clean

If your home hasn't been professionally cleaned in a while, a deep clean is usually the right first step. It gets into the corners, baseboards and buildup that a standard clean isn't built to handle. After that, standard cleans keep everything at that level.

If your home is already tidy and regularly maintained, a standard clean is probably all you need. A good cleaner will tell you honestly which one makes sense for your house rather than upselling you.

A quick way to decide: look at the shower glass, the stovetop and the baseboards in the kitchen. If a normal wipe would bring them back, a standard clean will do. If they have a layer that needs real scrubbing, start with a deep clean so your regular visits can keep things there instead of fighting old buildup every time.
