Cleaning Small Studios: Dance, Yoga, Fitness and Photo Spaces

That Cleaning Girl · Office Cleaning

Studios are a special kind of space. Mirrors cover whole walls, floors take a beating from bare feet and dance shoes, and people sweat, stretch and lie down on surfaces that need to be clean. If your space is more classroom than sanctuary after reading Church Cleaning: Offices, Classrooms, Nurseries and Fellowship Halls, this guide is for you.

We see studios of all kinds around Waxahachie, Midlothian and the south DFW area, from dance and yoga to boxing gyms and photo studios.

Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors

Mirrors are the centerpiece of a dance or fitness studio. They show every handprint, every sweat smudge and every water spot. They need cleaning on every visit, streak-free, all the way across and from top to bottom. Kids' studios especially get handprints at a very specific height.

A good glass cleaner and clean, dry microfiber cloths are the key. Work in sections on a long mirror wall so the cleaner doesn't dry on the glass before you get to it, which is what causes most streaks. Paper towels leave lint and streaks on large mirrors. Change to a fresh cloth as soon as the one in your hand starts to drag or smear; a damp, dirty cloth just moves the smudges around.

Don't forget the barres. Ballet barres and handrails are gripped by every student in every class, and they rarely get the attention mirrors do. A wipe down on every visit takes a couple of minutes and makes a real difference.

Tip: Clean large mirrors with a top-to-bottom S pattern, then check from an angle with the lights on. Streaks that hide straight on show up the moment someone stands off to the side.

Floors that take a beating

Studio floors are often the most important surface in the room:

  • Dance floors, like sprung floors or vinyl marley, need a cleaner that won't leave them slippery or sticky. Always follow the floor manufacturer's guidance.
  • Hardwood studio floors need a damp mop, never a soaking.
  • Rubber gym flooring needs vacuuming and a neutral cleaner.
  • Photo studio floors, often painted or sealed concrete, need careful cleaning to avoid damage, especially near backdrops. Paper and fabric backdrops should be rolled up or clearly marked as off limits before a visit, so nothing gets bumped or splashed.

In North Texas, studio floors also deal with dust, pollen and clay tracked in from the parking lot. A good entry mat and a shoe rule help a lot.

Mats, props and equipment

Yoga mats, blocks, straps, weights and benches get touched by sweaty hands every class. Studios usually have their own routine for wiping mats between classes. On cleaning day, the focus is on the equipment shelves and racks, the floor under and around the equipment, and any props the studio wants handled. Most studios have a specific cleaner they like for mats, and we're happy to use it.

Dressing rooms and cubbies

Dressing rooms and cubby areas collect a surprising amount of mess: forgotten water bottles, hair ties, socks and plenty of dust. Benches and cubbies get wiped, mirrors cleaned, floors vacuumed and mopped and trash emptied. Lost and found should go in a designated bin, not the trash. Tell us where that bin lives, and anything left behind goes there instead of being guessed at.

If your studio has a small kitchen or snack area for staff or parents, it gets the same treatment as any office break room: counters, sink, microwave, the outside of the fridge and the floor. Sticky juice box spills near the cubbies are a classic, and they attract ants quickly in warm weather.

Restrooms and showers

Studio restrooms get heavy use around class times. A full clean every visit covers toilets, sinks, mirrors, fixtures and floors. If your studio has showers, they need regular scrubbing to prevent soap scum and hard water buildup, which in our area can get thick fast.

The lobby and front desk

Parents wait in the lobby at dance studios. Clients check in at the front desk at gyms and yoga studios. Chairs, counters, door glass, the floor and any retail shelves need regular attention. Water fountains and filling stations should be wiped every visit.

Timing the clean

Studios often have classes from early morning to late evening. Cleaning works best:

  • Late at night after the last class.
  • Early morning before the first class.
  • On a day the studio is closed.

Recital season, competition season and the start of the new year at gyms are all times when an extra clean may help.

Summer can be tricky in North Texas. Studios get hot, people sweat more and air conditioners run constantly. A little more attention to mats, mirrors, restrooms and odor during the hottest months keeps the space feeling fresh when everyone walks in from a hundred-degree parking lot.
