Some people love the idea of a final clean of the old house, a last goodbye with a mop in hand. Others would rather do almost anything else. Neither is wrong. In The Move-Out Cleaning Supplies List (Pack These Last), we covered the kit for doing it yourself. Here is how to decide whether you should.
This is not a sales pitch. Plenty of people do their own move-out clean and do it well. The goal is to help you make the right call for your move.
Start with your time
The biggest factor is time. A move-out clean is not an hour or two. It is a real project, often a full day or more for a house. Ask yourself:
- When will the house be empty?
- When is your deadline, whether lease end or closing?
- Are you moving into another home the same day?
- Do you have work, school or kids to juggle?
If the window between the last box and the deadline is tight, or if you need to be at the new house on the same day, doing it yourself can mean cutting corners or staying up late.
Be honest about your energy
Moving is exhausting. By the end, most people are running on fumes. Cleaning an oven or scrubbing hard water off shower glass is tough even on a good day. Doing it after a week of packing and a day of carrying boxes is a different thing entirely. Think about how you will feel on that day, not how you feel today.
Weather adds to it here. A summer move in Texas means a hot truck, a hot garage and a lot of trips in and out in the heat. By the time the last box is loaded, many people have nothing left for an oven. A spring or fall move is easier on the body, but rain and red mud bring their own extra work at the doors.
Look at the condition
A home that was kept clean is mostly a checklist job, and many people can handle it. A home with years of buildup, a greasy oven, crusty fixtures or a lot of pet hair takes more time, more products and more patience. If the oven makes you wince when you open it, factor that in.
What is riding on it
If you rent, your deposit may depend in part on the condition of the home. If you are selling, the buyer's walkthrough and a smooth closing matter. For some people, the peace of mind of knowing it was done well is worth more than the time saved. For others, it is about pride in leaving a clean home for the next family.
There is also the cost of your own time to think about. Taking a day off work, hiring a sitter or pushing back your unpacking all have a price. When you compare doing it yourself with hiring it out, count those costs alongside the supplies and the effort.
A middle path
You do not have to choose all or nothing. Many people split it:
- Do the easy parts yourself as rooms empty: closets, cabinets, high dusting.
- Hire out the heavy parts: the oven, the bathrooms and the final floors.
- Or do the old house yourself and hire the move-in clean at the new one.
This is common for families moving within the same area, like from Mansfield to Midlothian, where both homes need attention in the same week.
If you hire, set it up well
- Tell the cleaner the size, condition and whether the house will be empty.
- Share the date the movers finish and your deadline.
- Make sure water, power and A/C will be on.
- Leave entry notes: a key, lockbox or door code, and any rooms to skip.
- Mention specific needs, like inside the oven, cabinets or the garage.
If you are renting, share your landlord's move-out checklist with your cleaner, so the clean focuses on what will be checked.
If you do it yourself, make it easier
- Start early, cleaning rooms as they empty.
- Keep your supply kit in your car.
- Get help, and give each helper one room and a list.
- Take breaks and drink water, especially in a Texas summer.
- Leave the floors for last.
And set a stopping point. Decide ahead of time what "done" looks like for each room, using a checklist, so you are not still polishing faucets at midnight while the floors wait.
