How to Prepare for Each Maid Service Visit (Without Pre-Cleaning)

That Cleaning Girl · Weekly & Bi-Weekly Maid Service

You do not have to clean before the cleaner comes. If you were curious about thanking your cleaner, see Should You Tip Your House Cleaner? A Friendly Guide to Tipping. This guide covers the opposite of pre-cleaning: a few minutes of simple prep that helps your cleaner do the best possible job.

The idea is easy. Your cleaner is there to clean, not to tidy. The less time they spend moving things, the more time they spend on the stuff that matters.

Why prep matters

A cleaner can only clean what they can reach. Counters covered in mail, bathroom vanities full of products and floors covered in toys all slow things down. Your cleaner can move some of it, but it takes time away from scrubbing showers and mopping floors.

A little prep from you means every minute of the visit goes toward actual cleaning. You get a deeper clean in the same amount of time.

There is a comfort side to it too. When the surfaces are clear, you can see exactly what got cleaned. A spotless counter with nothing on it feels like a fresh start. A counter cleaned around three stacks of mail just feels like the same counter with less dust.

The ten-minute pre-visit pick-up

Here is a simple routine for the night before your cleaning day:

  • Floors: pick up toys, shoes, clothes and anything else on the floor, so the vacuum can get everywhere.
  • Counters: move mail, keys, chargers and paperwork off the kitchen counters into a basket or drawer.
  • Bathrooms: put away the hairbrush, makeup and daily products so the vanity and shower can be cleaned properly.
  • Dishes: load the dishwasher or stack dishes neatly in the sink, unless dishes are one of your extras.
  • Laundry: get dirty clothes into the hamper and clean ones off the bed.
  • Beds: if you want linens changed, leave the fresh set on the bed.

That is the whole list. Ten minutes, maybe fifteen in a busy house.

If you have a bigger house or a lot going on, split it up. Do the bathrooms and bedrooms after dinner, then the kitchen and living room right before bed. Or give everyone in the house one room to pick up. Many hands, short job.

What you do not need to do

People often over-prepare, which defeats the point. You do not need to:

  • Wipe counters or clean the bathrooms.
  • Vacuum or mop.
  • Dust.
  • Scrub the stovetop.
  • Apologize for the mess.

Seriously. We see real homes every day — dog hair, muddy floors, sticky kitchen counters and all. That is the job.

Things to put away

A few items are better tucked away before your cleaner comes:

  • Valuables: jewelry, cash and anything you would rather not have handled.
  • Fragile or sentimental items: heirlooms, delicate decor or anything you are nervous about.
  • Paperwork: bills, mail and anything private.
  • Medications: especially in the bathroom, so they do not get moved around.

Your cleaner will be careful, but putting these away keeps your mind at ease.

The same goes for anything you do not want moved at all, like a puzzle in progress on the dining table, a sewing project or a kid's science fair poster drying on the floor. Leave a quick note or put it in a room we skip that day, and your cleaner will work around it.

Tip: Keep a clutter basket in the kitchen and one in the living room. The night before cleaning day, toss stray items in and set the baskets aside. Sort them later at your own pace.

Leaving notes

A short note on the counter is a great way to give your cleaner direction for that visit:

  • "Please focus on the kids' bathroom — it was a rough week."
  • "Skip the office today, I am working from home."
  • "Fridge extra this time, I already threw out the old stuff."
  • "Thanks for last time, the shower looked amazing!"

Notes are especially useful in the first few visits while your cleaner is learning your preferences. Once your cleaner knows your home, you will find you only need notes for one-off changes, like a guest staying over or a room that needs extra attention after a sick week.

Pets and access

If your pets need to be crated or put in a room, plan for that before your cleaner arrives. If you changed a code, moved the lockbox or have a new pet sitter coming and going, let us know before the visit. Small changes to entry details are the most common cause of a missed clean.

When you are home during the visit

If you will be home, just go about your day. You do not need to stay in one room or follow your cleaner around. If you are working from home, let your cleaner know which room you will be in so they can clean it last or skip it. Quiet calls and a vacuum do not mix well.
