The fridge is easy to ignore because you open it twenty times a day without really looking. Then one day there's a sticky ring under the syrup bottle and a smell nobody can find. A deep clean fixes all of it in an hour or so. After How to Deep Clean an Oven Without Harsh Fumes, this is the other big kitchen appliance worth a real reset.
Step 1: Pick your timing
The best time to clean the fridge is right before grocery day, when it's emptiest. Have a cooler with ice packs ready for anything that needs to stay cold. Turn the temperature dial off or unplug the fridge if you'll have the door open for a while, and lay a towel on the floor below.
Step 2: Empty and toss
Take everything out, one shelf at a time. This is the moment to be honest.
- Check expiration dates on condiments and dressings.
- Toss leftovers you can't identify or date.
- Combine duplicates, like the three open jars of pickles.
- Wipe sticky bottoms of bottles and jars before they go back in.
Step 3: Shelves and drawers
Remove the shelves and drawers that come out. Let glass shelves come to room temperature before washing them in warm water; cold glass can crack under hot water. Wash everything in the sink with warm water and dish soap, scrubbing corners and tracks with a small brush, then dry completely.
For shelves that don't come out, wipe them in place with a cloth dipped in warm soapy water, then a clean damp cloth to rinse.
Step 4: The inside walls and the gasket
Wipe the inside walls and ceiling from top to bottom with the baking soda solution. Pay attention to the back wall, where spills often run down and dry. Then clean the door gasket, the rubber seal around the door. Crumbs and drips collect in its folds. Run a damp cloth or a toothbrush along each fold and dry it well. A clean gasket seals better and helps keep the fridge cold.
Don't forget the door bins and the little dairy door. They hold more spills than anything else.
Step 5: The outside, top and coils
Wipe the doors and handles with warm soapy water, or a stainless steel cleaner if you have stainless. Wipe in the direction of the grain to avoid streaks. Then climb on a step stool and handle the top. Fridge tops collect a mix of dust and kitchen grease that turns tacky; a damp soapy cloth followed by a dry one takes care of it.
If you can reach them safely, vacuum the condenser coils, usually behind a grille at the bottom front or on the back. Dusty coils make the fridge work harder. Homes with pets, which is most of the homes we clean in the south DFW area, collect a lot of hair down there.
Step 6: Put it back smart
Before reloading, think about the layout.
- Keep raw meat on the bottom shelf, in a container, so nothing drips on other food.
- Put drinks and condiments in the door, where temperature swings most.
- Group leftovers together on one shelf so they get eaten.
- Line the crisper drawers with a paper towel to catch moisture and make the next clean easier.
Once it's all back in, a few small habits stretch the time between deep cleans:
- Wipe spills when they happen, before they dry.
- Do a quick toss of old leftovers the night before trash day.
- Keep an open box of baking soda on a back shelf to absorb odors.
- Give the shelves a quick wipe every couple of weeks.
- Store leaky items like berries, meat and thawing food on a plate or in a container.
Chasing down a smell
If the fridge still smells after a full clean, the source is usually somewhere you didn't look. Check the drip pan under the fridge, if yours has one and you can reach it safely; it collects condensation and can grow funk in a hot Texas garage or kitchen. Check under the crisper drawers, where a single lost grape can do a lot of damage. And check the freezer, since old food there can share its smell with the fridge side. A small bowl of dry coffee grounds or baking soda left overnight usually soaks up whatever odor is left. If a smell keeps coming back after all of that, it may be a drain line or a seal issue worth asking an appliance tech about.
Don't forget the freezer while you're at it. Toss anything freezer-burned or unlabeled, wipe up frozen drips with a warm cloth and check the ice maker bin. A clean freezer smells better, and the ice tastes better too.
