How Often Should You Deep Clean Your Home?

That Cleaning Girl · Deep Cleaning

There's no single right answer, but there is a good rule of thumb, and a few signs that tell you when it's time. If you've read How Long Does a Deep Clean Take?, you know a deep clean takes a while, so it helps to know how often it's actually worth doing.

The rule of thumb

For most homes with regular cleaning, a deep clean a few times a year is about right. Many people tie it to the seasons: spring after pollen, early fall after the summer heat, and early January after the holidays. Without regular cleaning, a deep clean every couple of months keeps buildup from getting out of hand.

That's a starting point. How often you really need one depends on how you live. A couple in a small apartment with no pets can go much longer between deep cleans than a family of five with two dogs and a backyard full of red clay. Neither one is doing anything wrong; they just live differently.

It depends on your regular schedule

How often you deep clean depends a lot on how often the house gets a regular clean.

  • Weekly cleaning: a deep clean two or three times a year usually keeps up with the details.
  • Every two or three weeks: a deep clean every few months.
  • Monthly cleaning: a deep clean every couple of months, or rotate detail work into each visit.
  • No regular cleaning: a deep clean every month or two, if you can manage it.

The more often surfaces get cleaned, the less buildup there is, and the longer the house can go between deep cleans.

Things that mean you need it more often

Some homes simply build up faster:

  • Pets: shedding, paw prints and pet hair in corners, upholstery and vents.
  • Kids: sticky fingers on doors and walls, crumbs everywhere, spills.
  • Allergies or asthma: keeping dust and pollen down matters more.
  • Heavy cooking: grease on cabinets, range hoods and walls.
  • Nearby construction: new-build neighborhoods mean fine dust drifting in.
  • Lots of traffic: big families, frequent guests or a home office that sees visitors.

Lots of homes around Waxahachie, Midlothian and Red Oak check several of those boxes at once, especially in newer subdivisions still building out.

Tip: if you can't remember the last time the baseboards or ceiling fans were cleaned, you're due. That's the simplest test there is.

North Texas seasons change the answer

The weather here plays a role. Cedar and oak pollen in late winter and spring coats every surface and works its way inside, even with the windows closed. Summer heat keeps fans and air conditioners running all day, which moves dust around the house. Fall brings its own dust and the start of muddy weather. And winter holidays mean more cooking and more guests.

Planning deep cleans around those seasons means each one catches a big wave of buildup right when it arrives. If you can only manage one or two a year, spring and the weeks right after the holidays tend to be the times people feel the difference most.

Signs you're due for a deep clean

Not sure if it's time? Watch for these signs:

  • A gray line of dust along the baseboards.
  • Shower glass that looks cloudy even when it's dry.
  • Grout that's darker than it used to be.
  • Cabinets near the stove that feel sticky.
  • Dust visible on ceiling fan blades from below.
  • A house that looks clean but doesn't feel fresh.
  • A big event coming up: guests, a party, a listing or a move.

Spreading deep cleaning out

You don't have to do everything at once. Some people prefer a rolling approach: one detail job each week, like baseboards one week, blinds the next, then fans, then grout. Over a couple of months, the whole house gets covered without ever spending a full day on it. Others prefer to hand it off and get it all done in one visit. Both work. The rolling approach saves a big day; the single visit saves remembering where you left off. Pick whichever one you're more likely to stick with, because the best schedule is the one that actually happens.

Combining deep cleans with regular service

The easiest way to stay ahead is a regular cleaning schedule with deep cleans at the turn of each season. The regular visits handle kitchens, bathrooms, dusting and floors. The seasonal deep cleans handle everything else. You never get to the point where the house feels out of control, and each deep clean is quicker because the regular cleaning kept things in decent shape.

Rental homes and lake houses are their own case. A place that sits empty for weeks gathers dust and cobwebs, then gets heavy use all at once. A deep clean before and after the busy season usually keeps them in good shape.
