What to Expect From Your First House Cleaning Visit

That Cleaning Girl · House Cleaning

Letting someone new into your house to clean can feel like a big step. Knowing what happens before, during and after the visit makes it a lot easier. If you've already read What to Do Before the House Cleaner Arrives, you know how to get the house ready. This guide covers what happens once the cleaner shows up.

It starts with a quote

Before anyone comes to your home, you'll get a price. With us, you fill out a short free quote form with your bedrooms, bathrooms and what you need. We reply with a price, usually the same day. For bigger jobs, like a very large house or one that hasn't been cleaned in a long time, we may need a quick look first.

Then you pick a day. Some people book a one-time clean to start. Others book a regular slot right away, every week, every two weeks, every three weeks or monthly.

Why the first visit is often different

The first clean in any home usually takes longer than later visits. Even tidy houses build up a layer of dust on fan blades, soap scum in the shower and grime around the sink that a regular clean doesn't fully reach. Getting that up to a good starting level is extra work.

That's why many first visits are booked as a deep clean, or include some extras. After that, regular cleans maintain the house at that level, and they go faster each time.

Tip: If it's been a while since your last professional clean, mention it when you request your quote. It helps us plan the right amount of time.

When the cleaner arrives

You'll get a text when your cleaner is on the way, so there's no guessing. If you're home, it's a good time to walk through the house together and point out your priorities, rooms to skip and anything delicate. If you're not home, we'll use the entry notes you gave us, like a lockbox, door code or key location.

We bring our own supplies and equipment, so you don't need to have anything ready. If you prefer certain products, leave them out and we'll use them.

How the clean is done

We work to a room-by-room checklist, so nothing gets missed. In general:

  • Kitchen: counters, stovetop, appliance fronts, microwave, sink, cabinet fronts and floors.
  • Bathrooms: toilets, tubs, showers, glass, sinks, mirrors, fixtures and floors.
  • Bedrooms: dusting, mirrors, making the bed or changing linens, and floors.
  • Living areas: dusting, wiping high-touch surfaces, tidying cushions and floors.
  • Throughout: trash emptied, floors vacuumed and mopped.

Cleaners usually work top to bottom and room by room, so dust falls onto surfaces that haven't been cleaned yet.

Do you need to be home?

Not at all. Many clients are at work during their cleaning. Some like to be home for the first visit to meet their cleaner and walk through the house, and then they're comfortable being away for later visits. Either way works. If you're home, just give the cleaner space to move from room to room.

If you work from home, let us know which room you'll be in, and we can plan the order around your calls.

How long it takes

The length of a visit depends on the size of the home, how many bathrooms there are, the condition of the house and any extras you add. A first visit almost always takes longer than later ones. If timing matters, for example if you need the house done before guests arrive, mention it when you book.

Later visits settle into a steady rhythm. Once your cleaner knows the house, where the supplies go, which rooms take the longest and what you care about most, each clean gets more efficient. That's one big reason we try to send the same cleaner to recurring clients whenever possible. Familiarity means fewer questions, fewer surprises and a better result every time.

After the visit

When the clean is done, the house is locked back up according to your instructions. Payment happens online with a card on file, so there's nothing to leave on the counter.

If you'd like something done differently next time, tell us. Maybe you'd like more attention on the baseboards or the shower glass, or a room skipped. We'll note it in your file. For recurring clients, we keep the same day and time and the same cleaner whenever possible, so your cleaner gets to know your home.
